The German Side of a Death Abroad Is Its Own Full Workload

When a German citizen dies in Turkey — or anywhere outside Germany — the family's immediate focus is on the local crisis: securing documents, arranging repatriation, dealing with police or prosecutors. But a parallel set of German administrative steps runs on its own deadlines, and missing them costs real money.

These notifications and cancellations do not wait for the body to arrive home. Several must be initiated within days, regardless of whether repatriation is still in progress.

Deutsche Rentenversicherung (German Pension Service)

The Deutsche Rentenversicherung must be notified of the death as soon as possible. Pension payments continue automatically until the system processes the death — and any overpayment after the month of death must be returned, often clawed back directly from the deceased's German bank account.

What to do:

• Contact the Deutsche Rentenversicherung Bund (or the regional carrier listed on the deceased's pension correspondence) by phone or in writing with the death certificate
• For deaths abroad, the Formül C (multilingual death certificate from Turkey) is accepted directly — no translation or apostille needed
• If you cannot produce the Formül C yet, send a preliminary written notification with the deceased's Versicherungsnummer (pension insurance number) and date of death to prevent further payouts

Surviving spouse entitlement: The surviving spouse is entitled to the Sterbevierteljahr — a three-month transitional benefit equal to three months of the deceased's full pension. This must be applied for (it is not automatic). File the application at your local Rentenversicherung office with the marriage certificate and death certificate.

Krankenkasse (Health Insurance)

German statutory health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung) coverage ends on the day of death. The deceased's Krankenkasse must be notified to:

• Terminate coverage and stop premium deductions from any remaining pension or bank standing orders
• Process any outstanding reimbursement claims (for example, if the deceased incurred medical costs abroad before dying)
• Confirm whether the surviving spouse or dependents retain their own coverage or need to transition

Critical detail: German statutory health insurance does not cover international body repatriation or foreign funeral costs. If no private travel insurance or ADAC Plus membership exists, the family bears the full repatriation cost. Notify the Krankenkasse promptly so they do not continue deducting premiums from the deceased's account — those deductions can be difficult to reverse once processed.

For private health insurance (private Krankenversicherung), check the policy for an international death benefit or repatriation rider. Some premium policies include partial repatriation coverage.

Standesamt Registration

To obtain an official German death certificate (Sterbeurkunde), the family can apply for registration of the foreign death with a German civil registry office (Standesamt). The Turkish Formül C is accepted directly by German authorities under the applicable international convention, although an institution may still ask for a German-issued certificate for a particular process.

Which Standesamt: If the deceased had a registered German residence (Hauptwohnsitz), the local Standesamt of that municipality handles the registration. If the deceased had no German residence (common for long-term expats), the registration goes to the Standesamt I in Berlin (Schönstedtstr. 5, 13357 Berlin; +49 30 90269 5000).

What to submit: The Formül C (no translation needed), the deceased's German passport or Personalausweis, and the marriage certificate if the Standesamt needs to update records.

Processing time: 4–12 weeks for the Nachbeurkundung (retroactive registration of a foreign death). Plan accordingly — some German institutions will accept the Formül C as an interim document.

Banks, Insurance, and Recurring Contracts

German banks must be notified of the death. Account access and any probate documents they require depend on the bank and account arrangement. However, a surviving spouse with a joint account or a valid Vorsorgevollmacht (transmortal power of attorney, valid under § 672 BGB — unlike in Turkey, this works in Germany) can typically continue basic account operations.

Life insurance: File a claim immediately and follow the individual policy's notification requirements. The death certificate is required; the Formül C is usually accepted for the initial filing.

Recurring contracts to cancel or transfer:

• Rental lease (Mietvertrag) — the estate is liable for rent until the contractual notice period expires (usually 3 months)
• Utility contracts (electricity, gas, internet, phone)
• Vehicle insurance and registration
• Subscriptions, memberships, and standing orders

Many institutions request a death certificate for cancellation. Batch these notifications: make copies of the Formül C or the German Sterbeurkunde and send them by registered mail (Einschreiben).

If the Deceased Also Had Turkish Contracts

For German citizens who lived part-time in Turkey or owned property there, the Turkish administrative side runs in parallel. Turkish bank accounts, rental agreements, utility contracts (elektrik, su, doğalgaz), and municipal registrations may need to be handled through a Turkish attorney authorized by a Vekâletname — a German power of attorney will not work for the relevant Turkish institutions.
