German Pension Death Abroad Notification

Stop the Pension Payments Immediately

When a German pension recipient dies abroad, the pension authority (Deutsche Rentenversicherung) must be notified as quickly as possible. Any pension payments deposited into the deceased's account after the month of death must be returned to the state. The longer you wait, the larger the overpayment and the more complicated the recovery process.

For pensioners receiving their Rente through Deutsche Post AG Renten Service (which handles international pension disbursements), the notification goes to:

Deutsche Post AG Niederlassung Renten Service 13496 Berlin

The notification should include the multilingual international death certificate issued by the Spanish Registro Civil, which is accepted without further translation.

Also notify the deceased's German health insurance provider (Krankenkasse) to cancel coverage and stop outstanding premium deductions.

The Sterbevierteljahr: Three Months of Full Pension

The Sterbevierteljahr (literally "death quarter") is a crucial surviving-spouse benefit that many families either don't know about or miss the deadline for.

If the deceased was receiving a German state pension, the surviving spouse can apply for the Sterbevierteljahr within 30 days of the death. This provides three full months of the deceased's pension paid to the surviving spouse as a bridge payment — at 100% of the deceased's pension amount, not the reduced survivor's pension rate.

The payment is designed to prevent immediate financial hardship while the surviving spouse arranges longer-term pension and insurance adjustments.

After the Sterbevierteljahr ends, the surviving spouse must handle the regular Witwenrente or Witwerrente (survivor's pension) application under the applicable German rules.

How to Apply from Abroad

For the filing route from abroad, contact the responsible pension authority or Deutsche Post AG Renten Service; a German consulate can explain how the documents can be forwarded.

Required documents:

  • International death certificate from Spain
  • Marriage certificate (multilingual version if available)
  • The deceased's pension number (Versicherungsnummer or Rentenversicherungsnummer)
  • Surviving spouse's identification and bank details

The application window is 30 days. If a judicial autopsy delays the death certificate, contact the Rentenversicherung immediately about the documentation required for the application.

Registering the Death at the German Standesamt

Separately from pension matters, the family can apply for a retroactive registration of the abroad death (Nachbeurkundung des Sterbefalls im Ausland) at the German civil registry.

If the deceased had a registered address in Germany at any point, the application goes to the Standesamt in that municipality. If the deceased never lived in Germany (lifelong expats), exclusive jurisdiction lies with Standesamt I in Berlin.

There is no legal deadline for the Nachbeurkundung, and it is not technically required. But obtaining a German death certificate (Sterbeurkunde) simplifies pension adjustments, insurance claims, and German probate — German institutions are more comfortable with their own certificates.

Required documents for the Nachbeurkundung:

  • International Spanish death certificate
  • Deceased's birth certificate
  • Marriage or civil partnership certificate
  • Proof of last German address
  • Applicant's valid passport and proof of kinship
