The Pension Clock Starts Immediately

When a British pensioner dies in Turkey — whether on holiday, visiting family, or living as a retired expat — the State Pension doesn't stop automatically. DWP has no way of knowing about a death that occurs outside the UK unless someone tells them, and every payment that lands after the date of death becomes a recoverable overpayment.

The longer the delay, the larger the debt. DWP will claw back overpaid pension from the estate, and if the money has already been spent or withdrawn by a joint account holder, the recovery process gets adversarial fast.

How to Notify DWP

For a death abroad, the notification route depends on whether the deceased was a temporary traveller or a permanent expat.

If the pensioner was normally resident in the UK (on holiday or a short visit to Turkey), you can use the Tell Us Once service through the local council where they lived. Tell Us Once notifies DWP, HMRC, the Passport Office, DVLA, and the local council in a single registration. You'll need the apostilled Turkish Formül C (the multilingual death certificate) or a certified English translation of the Ölüm Belgesi — the UK registrar verifies the foreign death certificate before issuing a Tell Us Once reference number.

If the pensioner was a permanent expat in Turkey, Tell Us Once is unavailable. You must contact DWP directly using the current Pension Service or International Pension Centre contact route. You'll need the deceased's National Insurance number, the date and place of death, and a copy of the Turkish death certificate.

Either way, notify DWP within days — not weeks. Payments after the date of death are recoverable overpayments; ask DWP to confirm how the final payment is allocated.

Bereavement Support Payment

If the deceased was receiving State Pension, a surviving spouse or civil partner may be eligible for Bereavement Support Payment (BSP), subject to DWP's current eligibility rules. Check the current payment rate and claim deadline when applying rather than relying on figures from an older guide.

The death occurring abroad does not by itself settle eligibility. A spouse living permanently in Turkey should check DWP's current overseas-claim rules before assuming that the claim will or will not qualify.

Other Benefits That Need Stopping

State Pension isn't the only payment that continues until someone reports the death:

• Pension Credit stops on the date of death — report to the Pension Credit helpline
• Attendance Allowance or Personal Independence Payment must be reported to DWP separately if Tell Us Once wasn't used
• Winter Fuel Payment — overpayments are recovered from the estate
• Council Tax Reduction — the local council needs to know if the deceased was a named occupant

If the pensioner was receiving an occupational or private pension alongside the State Pension, contact each pension provider separately. They each have their own notification and overpayment recovery processes.

The Expat Pension Complication

For a permanent expat in Turkey, confirm the deceased's actual State Pension rate in payment with DWP. The amount in payment matters for the estate calculation and any survivor-benefit assessment.

Getting the Paperwork Right

DWP and UK pension providers need proof of death. The Turkish Formül C — the multilingual certificate issued by the Nüfus Müdürlüğü — includes an English-language section, but individual providers may still request a certified English translation and the original Ölüm Belgesi. If a provider requests a full English translation, have the original Ölüm Belgesi translated by a sworn translator and notarised at a Turkish notary public.
