UK Pension and Benefits After a Death in Spain
Stopping the State Pension
When a British pensioner dies in Spain, the state pension does not stop automatically. Do not assume the DWP will be notified: Tell Us Once may be available if the deceased normally lived in England, Scotland or Wales and was abroad temporarily, but someone normally resident in Spain should notify the DWP directly.
Call the DWP Bereavement Service directly:
- 0800 731 0469 (free from the UK)
- +44 191 218 1914 (from abroad)
Have the deceased's National Insurance number ready before calling. The DWP will stop pension payments and begin processing any overpayments.
Any pension paid into the deceased's account after the date of death is an overpayment that must be repaid. If the pension was going into a Spanish bank account that's now frozen, mention this on the call and ask about repayment arrangements.
Who Else to Notify Manually
If Tell Us Once is unavailable, contact the relevant UK departments separately:
- HMRC — to close the tax record, stop tax credits, and resolve the final Self Assessment
- Local council — to end Council Tax liability if the deceased held a UK property
- Private pension providers — each one individually, with a certified copy of the legalised Spanish death certificate
- Life insurance companies — with the death certificate and policy documents
- UK banks and building societies — each institution separately

Bereavement Support Payment
The surviving spouse or civil partner may qualify for Bereavement Support Payment (BSP) if:
- They were under State Pension age when their partner died
- Their partner paid enough National Insurance contributions (at least 25 weeks of contributions in any one tax year since 6 April 1975)
BSP comes in two rates:
- Standard rate: £2,500 lump sum + up to 18 monthly payments of £100
- Higher rate (if they were getting or entitled to Child Benefit for a child living with them, or were pregnant): £3,500 lump sum + up to 18 monthly payments of £350
To receive the one-off payment and all 18 monthly payments, claim within 3 months of the date of death. Claims made later but within 12 months may receive the one-off payment and fewer monthly payments; claims made after 12 months but before 21 months may receive some monthly payments but no one-off payment. After 21 months, you usually cannot receive any payments.
If the surviving partner lives in Spain, eligibility depends on whether Spain pays bereavement benefits; confirm the overseas position with the DWP Bereavement Service.

Funeral Expenses Payment
People in England or Wales receiving a qualifying benefit can apply for a Funeral Expenses Payment when arranging a funeral in the UK, the European Economic Area, or Switzerland. Qualifying benefits include Universal Credit, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Pension Credit, Housing Benefit, or a Support for Mortgage Interest loan.
The payment covers:
- Necessary burial or cremation fees
- Up to £1,000 for other funeral costs (flowers, coffin, funeral director fees)
- Travel costs for the person arranging the funeral
It can be used toward funeral expenses incurred abroad, including in Spain, though the maximum payment rarely covers the full cost of a Spanish funeral (€3,100 to €4,400 for cremation) or body repatriation (£3,000 to £6,000).
Apply using form SF200, available from the DWP, or call the Bereavement Service.
Winter Fuel Payment and Other Benefits
If the deceased was receiving Winter Fuel Payment, tell the DWP about the death when you make the pension notification and ask how it will be closed. Do not assume other benefit records update automatically.
Attendance Allowance, Personal Independence Payment, and Carer's Allowance for a carer in the UK who was caring for the deceased must also be reported. Contact the relevant benefit helplines separately.
The Overpayment Recovery Timeline
The DWP will issue an overpayment notice specifying the amount due and the repayment method. If the estate's assets are frozen or in probate, explain this when you contact the DWP and ask what repayment arrangement is available.
