A single spelling error between an Indian passport and a Gulf-issued death certificate can freeze the entire repatriation and estate settlement process. It happens more often than families expect, and when it does, the correction pathway runs through bureaucracies that move slowly even under normal circumstances.

Why Name Discrepancies Happen

Gulf death certificates may be issued in Arabic or bilingually. When an Arabic certificate is translated to English for Indian consular and legal use, two types of errors regularly appear:

Phonetic transliteration mistakes. Arabic-to-English translation agencies convert names by ear, and Indian names with unfamiliar syllable patterns get mangled. "Kocheril" becomes "Koshiril." "Raghunath" becomes "Raghunat." These are not typos — they reflect different phonetic conventions between Arabic script and English rendering.

How the Mismatch Stalls Everything

The Indian consulate cross-references the local death certificate against the deceased's passport. If the names do not match exactly, the consulate cannot proceed with passport cancellation, death registration, or the repatriation NOC.

In Saudi Arabia, if a family files a Legal Heirship Certificate or Power of Attorney with a name that uses initials or an abbreviated form (such as "Mohd" for Mohamed or "Abd" for Abdul), the Saudi judiciary rejects the petition for death compensation or estate distribution outright. The family must re-execute the document in India with the full expanded name, get it re-translated to Arabic, re-attested by the State Home Department, MEA, and the Saudi Embassy, and re-file. The correction process depends on the country:

UAE: Correction requests go through the issuing health authority (DHA, DoH, or MOHAP). For digitally issued certificates, follow the issuing authority's digital correction process before finalizing the attestation chain.

Saudi Arabia: Corrections to an Ahwal Al-Madani death certificate can only be authorized by the head office in Riyadh, regardless of which city issued the original. This centralization adds weeks because the request must travel up the administrative chain.

Prevention Is Faster Than Correction

When the initial death notification is generated — whether by the hospital or the police — immediately compare every name, date of birth, and passport number against the deceased's actual Indian passport. Catch discrepancies at this stage, before the document enters the attestation chain, to avoid later correction and re-attestation delays.
