Notify Centrelink, ATO, and Super Funds After a Death Overseas in Indonesia

Every Agency Needs the Same Document — But Asks for It Differently

After an Australian dies in Indonesia, the executor or next of kin must notify a long list of Australian agencies and financial institutions to stop payments, release funds, and begin estate administration. Nearly all of them need proof of death — but each has its own form, its own verification process, and its own idea of what "certified" means.

Here is a practical walkthrough of the major notifications, what each agency actually requires, and the traps that slow families down.

Services Australia (Centrelink and Medicare)

If the deceased received any Centrelink payments — Age Pension, JobSeeker, or Disability Support Pension — those payments must stop. Notify Services Australia within 28 days using the Advice of Death process. You will need:

  • A certified copy of the NAATI-translated Akta Kematian
  • The deceased's Centrelink Reference Number (CRN)

The Acute Family Crisis Provision

If a family member receiving Centrelink benefits needs to fly to Bali urgently to coordinate the repatriation or attend a funeral, their payments would normally stop upon leaving Australia. Under the "acute family crisis" provision, they can apply to continue receiving benefits while overseas for 2–3 weeks (up to 6 weeks maximum).

To qualify, they must submit evidence upon return — hospital records, police reports, and the foreign death certificate. This provision applies to Special Benefit, Austudy, ABSTUDY, and Farm Household Allowance recipients.

Australian Taxation Office (ATO)

The executor must notify the ATO using the Notification of a Deceased Person form (available online or as paper form NAT 74279). This appoints the executor as the Legal Personal Representative (LPR) for the deceased estate.

Within 30 days of submission, the LPR must present their own photo ID, the certified translated Akta Kematian, and the Grant of Probate at a participating Australia Post outlet to complete identity verification. The ATO will then release a data package containing the deceased's tax and superannuation records for the preceding three income years, allowing the LPR to file the final date-of-death tax return.

The foreign death certificate catches some ATO processing officers off guard. The Kemenkumham Apostille is what validates it — point the officer to the Hague Convention authentication if they question the document.

Superannuation Death Benefits

Super funds typically hold a substantial portion of an estate's liquid wealth. Releasing death benefits requires:

  • The Death Benefit Information Form (each fund has its own version)
  • A certified copy of the translated Akta Kematian
  • The Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration

One common problem: the standard Indonesian Akta Kematian may state a generic cause of death ("cardiac arrest") without the underlying clinical detail. Some super fund trustees require the supplementary forensic report from Professor Ngoerah Hospital, also NAATI-translated, to verify the claim. Ask the fund upfront whether their standard death certificate requirements differ for foreign deaths.

If claiming as an interdependent or financial dependant rather than as the estate executor, expect to provide extensive documentation proving shared residency and joint financial accounts.

Releasing Funds from Frozen Bank Accounts

Australian banks freeze all sole-name accounts immediately upon notification of death. No withdrawals, no direct debits, no scheduled transfers.

But banks can release funds to pay for funeral, cremation, or repatriation invoices before probate is granted. Under Section 69B of the Banking Act 1959, some institutions cap this at AUD 15,000, though major banks like Commonwealth Bank may release up to AUD 100,000 with joint authorisation from all named executors and certified invoices.

The bank's legal department will reject any document that lacks the NAATI-certified translation. Do not attempt to use the raw Indonesian Akta Kematian — it will be returned.

Compassionate Release of Superannuation

If the family needs funds to pay for funeral or repatriation costs and cannot access the deceased's bank accounts because probate has not been granted, compassionate release is a separate ATO process from a death-benefit claim. Do not assume it can release the deceased's superannuation; confirm eligibility and required documents directly with the ATO and the fund.

The Australian Death Notification Service

The Australian Death Notification Service (ADNS) is a unified online portal that lets the next of kin notify multiple participating banks, utilities, super funds, and government agencies with a single digital submission. It does not replace the individual notifications above, but it handles many of the secondary notifications (utility companies, insurance policies, subscription services) in one pass.

The Australian Dies in Indonesia — Family Emergency Guide includes notification checklists for every major agency, a government bureaucracy kit with letter templates, and step-by-step instructions for the super fund claim process using a foreign death certificate.
