Sikh Funeral Insurance Claim and Bank Settlement in India
The Administrative Work Nobody Warns You About
The funeral is over. The Bhog is done. The Rasam Pagri has passed the turban to the next generation. And now the real administrative work begins — settling bank accounts, filing insurance claims, transferring property, and accessing pension or provident fund benefits.
Most families in Punjab discover these tasks one at a time, reactively, when a bank refuses access or an insurance company sends a letter. The result is months of sequential trips to offices that could have been handled in parallel if the family had known the sequence upfront.
Document Foundation: What You Need Before Everything Else
Two documents unlock every other financial process:
1. Registered Death Certificate. Not the hospital death report — the official certificate from the Sewa Kendra, issued after completing the death registration process. Many banks, insurers, and government offices require it, so confirm each institution's current document list.
2. Legal Heir Certificate. Issued by the Tehsildar after verifying all surviving heirs. This document names every legal heir and their relationship to the deceased. The full application process takes 15-30 working days.
Get both processes started simultaneously. The death certificate should be filed within 21 days. The Legal Heir Certificate application can be submitted as soon as the death certificate is in hand.
Bank Account Settlement
When the account holder dies, the bank may restrict or freeze the account once it is notified. Access depends on how the account was set up:
Accounts with a nominee. The nominee can generally start a claim by presenting the death certificate, their own ID, and the bank's claim form. Processing time varies by bank. The nominee generally receives the funds for the benefit of the legal heirs; nomination alone does not decide succession.
Joint accounts (Either or Survivor mode). The surviving account holder may be able to continue operating the account after submitting the death certificate, subject to the bank's procedure. The bank may update the account to a single-holder account.
Accounts without a nominee. This is where it gets slow. The bank may require a Legal Heir Certificate for claims within its internal threshold, or a Succession Certificate from a civil court for larger or disputed claims. The family submits the certificate along with the death certificate, an indemnity bond, and a letter of claim signed by all legal heirs, as required by the bank.
Fixed deposits. Each FD may require separate claim details. Gather all FD receipt numbers and maturity dates before visiting the bank.
Practical tip. Visit the branch in person with the death certificate within the first week. Even before the Legal Heir Certificate is ready, the branch manager can tell you exactly what documents they'll need for that specific account type, preventing wasted trips later.

Life Insurance Claims
LIC (Life Insurance Corporation of India). Start with LIC's current death-claim form and submit the death certificate, policy document, claimant's ID, and any medical records requested. Confirm the insurer's current document list and processing timeline; the policy and circumstances of death may affect review.
Private insurers. Each company has its own claim form and process, but common documents include the death certificate, policy document, claimant's ID, and any medical records requested. Many private insurers have online claim initiation.
Employer group insurance. If the deceased was employed, contact their HR department. Employer-provided group insurance is often the simplest claim — HR handles most of the paperwork.
Key deadline. Check the policy and insurer's current claims rules, and file as early as possible because a delay can lead to requests for additional explanation or documents.
Provident Fund and Gratuity
Employee Provident Fund (EPF). If the deceased was a salaried employee, the EPF balance can be claimed by the nominee or legal heir. Submit the current EPFO claim forms for PF withdrawal and pension benefits to the regional EPFO office. Online claims through the EPFO portal may be possible if the deceased's UAN (Universal Account Number) is available.
Gratuity. Contact the employer's HR department or the relevant authority promptly about death-related gratuity eligibility, nominee or legal-heir documents, and the applicable timeline. Do not assume the ordinary five-year service condition applies to a death claim.
Government Pension and Benefits
Family pension. If the deceased was a government employee or retiree, the surviving spouse may be eligible for family pension. Contact the pension disbursement authority — the Accountant General's office for state government employees, or the relevant central government department.
Survivor benefits. Various central and state schemes provide one-time or ongoing benefits. Eligibility depends on the deceased's employment status, age, and the family's income level.
The Sequence That Saves Time
Don't do these tasks one after another. Run them in parallel:
Week 1-2 (during mourning period): File for the death certificate at the Sewa Kendra. Visit the bank branch to understand requirements.
Week 3-4: Receive the death certificate. File for the Legal Heir Certificate. Initiate insurance claims (these don't require the Legal Heir Certificate — the death certificate and policy documents are enough).
Week 5-8: Follow up on the Legal Heir Certificate. Submit bank claims as soon as the certificate arrives.
Month 3-6: Complete property transfers, pension applications, and any remaining financial settlements.
The Sikh Funeral Punjab planning guide includes a post-funeral administrative tracker that sequences every financial and legal task — with the documents each one requires and the offices you need to visit — so the family can run processes in parallel instead of discovering each requirement only after completing the previous step.
