Apostille Death Certificate Cyprus

A Cypriot civil death certificate on its own is not legally valid for use with UK financial institutions, the Probate Registry, or pension providers. It needs a Hague Apostille — a standardised certificate that authenticates the document for use in another Hague Convention country. Both the UK and the Republic of Cyprus are signatories, so the process is well-established. Here is exactly how it works.

Where to Get the Apostille

The only competent authority for apostilling Cypriot public documents is the Ministry of Justice and Public Order. The main office is at 125 Athalassas Avenue, 1461 Strovolos, Nicosia. There is also a branch office in Limassol.

You must present the original trilingual civil death certificate in person. The ministry applies an apostille sticker to the document featuring a handwritten signature, official seal, and verification hologram. The statutory fee is €5 per document in stamps. Same-day walk-in service is available — you do not need an appointment.

If you need multiple copies apostilled (and you should — UK banks, insurers, and the Probate Registry each need their own), bring each original certificate separately. Each one gets its own apostille sticker and its own €5 fee.

If You Cannot Visit Nicosia in Person

Many UK families are managing the entire process remotely. You have two options:

Your funeral director. If you have appointed a local Cypriot funeral director, ask them to submit the certificates for apostille on your behalf. Most established funeral homes offer this as part of their service.

A local solicitor. A Cyprus-based lawyer can handle apostille applications along with other legal matters like probate resealing or forced heirship navigation. This makes sense if you are already instructing a lawyer for estate administration.

Do not post original death certificates to the Ministry of Justice — they require physical presentation.

The Northern Cyprus Problem

If the death occurred in Northern Cyprus (TRNC), the TRNC civil death certificate cannot be apostilled by the southern Ministry of Justice. The Republic of Cyprus does not recognise documents issued by the TRNC administration.

For UK institutions that require apostilled or legalised documents, families dealing with a Northern Cyprus death face a different path. The UK Foreign Legalisation Office may require alternative copy-certification methods. This is a specialist area — consult a lawyer who handles TRNC estate matters, or contact the UK Foreign Legalisation Office directly for guidance on the specific certification method they will accept.

What the Apostille Does and Does Not Cover

The apostille certifies that the Cypriot death certificate is an authentic public document issued by a recognised authority. It does not certify the accuracy of the information on the certificate, and it does not serve as a translation.

If any UK institution requests a certified translation alongside the apostilled certificate — which some bank compliance teams do, even though the Cypriot certificate includes English text — the translation must display the translator's full name, business name, business address, contact phone number, signature, and registration number. An informal translation or a Google Translate printout will be rejected.

Processing Order

The recommended sequence is: (1) register the death at the District Administration Office, (2) collect multiple certified copies of the death certificate at €5 each, (3) take the originals to the Ministry of Justice for apostille, (4) arrange certified translations if needed. Only then present to UK institutions.

Doing this in the wrong order — particularly presenting an un-apostilled certificate to a UK bank — results in the document being rejected and the family needing to go back to Nicosia, costing days or weeks.
