Thank You for Funeral Flowers: Notes and Wording Examples

Who to Thank for Flowers

Not every floral arrangement requires the same type of acknowledgment. Prioritize your limited energy:

  • Named arrangements with a card — the sender expects a personal thank you
  • Workplace or group arrangements — one card addressed to the team or department is enough
  • Anonymous flowers delivered through a funeral home — ask the funeral director if they have a record; if not, let it go
  • Standing sprays and casket pieces from close family — a verbal thank you is often sufficient since you are already in regular contact

Start a simple list as flowers arrive: who sent them, what type, and whether you have their mailing address. This tracking step prevents the panicked "who was that from?" scramble two weeks later.

For a Floral Arrangement

"Thank you for the beautiful flowers you sent. They were a bright spot during an incredibly hard week, and we thought of you each time we looked at them."

For a Sympathy Plant

"Thank you for the peace lily. It is sitting in Mom's favorite window now, and watching it grow feels like a small way of keeping her memory alive in the house."

For a Standing Spray or Wreath

"The spray you sent for the service was stunning. Several people commented on it, and it gave the room the warmth we wanted for Dad's farewell."

For Flowers from a Workplace

"Thank you to everyone at [company name] for the arrangement you sent to the service. Knowing that David's colleagues cared enough to mark the day meant a great deal to our family."

For Flowers Sent to the Home

"Thank you for the bouquet you sent to the house. Having fresh flowers on the kitchen table during those first few days made the house feel a little less empty."

Cultural Considerations

Flowers are standard in most Western Christian traditions, but not universal. In Jewish mourning customs, flowers are traditionally discouraged — mourners instead give charitable donations or kosher food baskets for the Shiva house. In Islamic tradition, flowers are also not customary; community members bring halal meals and make charitable donations in the deceased's name.

If you received flowers from someone whose cultural background would not typically include them, it means they went out of their way to honor your family's customs. That deserves specific acknowledgment.

In Buddhist traditions, only white or yellow flowers — typically chrysanthemums — are appropriate. Red flowers are considered inauspicious as red symbolizes joy and celebration.

Timing

Traditional Roman Catholic etiquette suggests sending written thanks within two to four weeks for Mass cards, flowers, and practical help. If it has been longer, send them anyway. There is no expiration date on gratitude. A card that arrives two months later still means something to the person who picked out that arrangement.

When You Have Dozens of Arrangements

If you received more than 20 arrangements, the five-notes-a-day pacing system works well. At five cards per day, even 40 flower thank you notes take just eight days. Keep your messages short — two or three sentences is the expectation, not a paragraph.
